Since the creation of Muchinga Province in 2011, the province has enjoyed numerous investment potentials in various sector which includes the following:

Availability of Chambeshi plains ideal for sugar cane, banana and rice plantations.

Availability of wild fruits and other forest products like mushroom and caterpillar that can be processed and preserved.

Availability of good climatic conditions that can support citrus fruit production on a commercial scale.

Conducive environment for commercial livestock rearing.

Investment Opportunities

Muchinga Province is endorsed with a lot of investment opportunities in terms of Manufacturing and would be investors can come and explore these opportunities, for example….

Establishing of rice or sugar plantation in the area due to vast wetlands

Setting up more SMEs and companies in Muchinga Province that can be the off taker of palm oil.

Setting up more designing and tailoring firms as off taker of silk product.

Mechanizing the agriculture sector in the region so as to increase production and supply milling plant with adequate raw material for processing.

Investing in Solar PV Power Project, wind and hydro power projects to supplement the provision of hydroelectricity to Sericulture Silk Company

Investment opportunities exist in transport and logistics in the area due to high demand in other logistics to the silk company.

Investing in Mudzi Umodzi Kanchibiya Solar PV Power Project with 150 capacities to which a feasibility was already conducted to supplement the deficit of hydroelectricity to ZAMPALM company.

Despite the above investment opportunities,Muchinga only has three manufacturing firms and a milling plant (Zambia National Service) which includes:

Mealie Meal Production

An industrial mealie meal milling plant which is one of the country’s largest with a daily processing capacity of 240 tonnes operated by Zambia National Service in Mpika District has capacity to supply mealie meal to northern region and beyond if operated at its full capacity.

Silk Production

The Wonderful Group of Companies $31 million silk farm in Mpika District is cultivating mulberry plants which will in turn provide the worms with leaves to feed on in order to produce silk materials which Zambia intend to export as a finish product and not raw material

Palm Oil Production

Research has shown that by 2050 global demand for vegetable oil will be 240 million tonnes. In order for Zambia to position for this future demand Zampalm Limited Company located in Kanchibiya District in Muchinga Province established the first palm plantation. The company was incorporated in 2009 following ZAMBEEF acquisition of        ZAMANITA limited to develop an oil palm plantation and crushing mill. In 2017 Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) acquired 90% shares through shareholders’ agreement while ZAMBEEF has 10%.

Currently the Company has 20,000 hectares of land with over 409,506 palm planted over an area of 2,973 hectares with 39,000 seedlings on its 20,000 hectares. Palm fruit is harvested daily and process it through a mill plant with capacity of 2 to 3 tonnes of fresh fruits per hour, producing a yield of 18% of crude palm oil with a possibility of generating $170 million over the next decade.

Out grower scheme was rolled out by ZAMPALM attracting and benefiting over 1,000 farmers who are currently cultivating 700 hectares of land.

Uses of Palm Oil
  • Industrially – palm oil is used for making cosmetics, soaps, toothpaste, wax, shampoo, lubricant and ink.
  • Its derivatives are found in food such as margarines and ice cream and is also used as a thickener.
  • Palm oil is used for prevention of vitamin A deficiency, cancer, brain diseases, aging, treating malaria, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
