Number of Orphans
Many pupils in primary and secondary school have challenges of completing their education because of loss of their parents. Some pupils are double orphans in that they have lost both parents whilst others are single orphans with one parent still alive. According to the GRZ (2015), Muchinga province has a total of 33,126 orphaned pupils in its education system across different levels from grade one (1) to grade twelve (12). The high number of orphaned children could explain in part the low school completion rates in the province.
