Geographical Characteristics

The province has a total area of 87,714.15km²; it is the fourth largest in terms of geographical size. Out of the total surface area, 60% is arable land and 40% is land under mountains, wetlands and game management areas. The Province falls in two ecological regions namely region III and region I. However, over 75 percent of the province falls in region III with average temperature between 10 and 28, and annual rainfall of 1000mm to 1400mm while less than 25 percent of the area enjoys region I climatic condition with average annual rainfall of less than 1000mm with warm to hot temperatures. Chama district including areas along Luangwa valley in Isoka district and Nabwalya area in Mpika district falls in region I.
