NAKONDE, Zambia – President Hakainde Hichilema has officially commissioned the upgraded Phase 1 of the Nakonde One-Stop Border Post (OSBP), unveiling ambitious plans to transform the busy Zambia-Tanzania gateway into a major economic hub.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Hichilema described the border as a once “underutilized asset” that will now drive national development. He directly linked its improved efficiency to funding for social programs like free education and school feeding programs.
Minister of Commerce Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga stated that the new infrastructure eliminates costly delays, revealing that physical inspections had previously cost the nation an estimated $95 million per year. He assured that within two years, these upgrades would “unlock the full potential of the corridor,” making Zambia a more attractive investment destination.
Minister of Infrastructure Housing and Urban Development Charles Milupi detailed the project’s funding, thanking the UK for a $10 million grant that financed Phase 1. This phase includes a high-speed cargo scanner processing 100 trucks per hour, modern truck parks, and customs buildings. He also announced a $19.6 million World Bank commitment for Phase 2, which will add a main terminal extension, animal holding bays, and a traffic roundabout.
Ongoing road improvements were also highlighted, including the completion of the Chinsali-Nakonde road and active contractor sites on the Isoka-Muyoba road and Bemba bridge.
President Hichilema urged Zambians to see themselves as “land-linked” rather than landlocked. He outlined future projects, including the upgrade of the TAZARA railway, an expanded fuel pipeline to protect roads, and the commencement of construction on a new international airport in Nakonde.
Praising local traditional leaders and citizens for their partnership and work ethic, the President emphasized the need to add value to agriculture by processing goods locally before export.
