Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Reverend Mathews Chilekwa has urged Zambians to embrace peace and unity ahead of the forthcoming General Elections, emphasizing that conducting a peaceful vote is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
Officiating at the Zambia Police Open Day and Medal Parade held in Chinsali today, Reverend Chilekwa spoke under the theme: “Peaceful Election, Our Shared Responsibility.”
“This year’s theme reminds us of the forthcoming General Elections, in which the Zambia Police Service is mandated to provide security. This can only be achieved in collaboration with key stakeholders,” Reverend Chilekwa said, adding that elections are both a right and a privilege that binds the nation together.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment under President Hakainde Hichilema to transform the Police Service into an approachable, professional, and accountable institution.
Reverend Chilekwa assured officers that government remains committed to improving conditions of service for uniformed personnel, including addressing challenges related to transport, accommodation, and welfare.
He highlighted the increase of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from K1.6 million to K40 million, which has facilitated the purchase of CDF Land Cruisers for the Police Service.
The Permanent Secretary also warned officers against corruption, urging them to execute their duties diligently in line with government policies.
Reverend Chilekwa expressed concern over rising reports of murders and attacks on elderly persons suspected of practicing witchcraft, as well as sexual offences and violent crimes. He commended the police for warning that the long arm of the law will catch up with all criminals.
Deserving officers were recognized and awarded for their hard work during the ceremony.
The Permanent Secretary assured that government will continue investing in modern investigative equipment, capacity building, and infrastructure development for the Police Service.
He thanked stakeholders for their continued support in the fight against crime.
Reverend Chilekwa commended Commanding Officer Mr. Dennis Moola and the organizers for ensuring the event’s success.
