CHINSALI, MUCHINGA PROVINCE – The Assistant Secretary for Muchinga Province Evans Hichilema today delivered a speech at the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebrations in Chinsali on behalf of the Permanent Secretary Rev. Mathews Chilekwa, outlining a comprehensive government agenda focused on empowering teachers, strengthening their resilience, and building a sustainable education system for the nation.
Speaking under the global theme, β€œEmpowering Educators: Strengthening Resilience, Building Sustainability,” Mr. Hichilema hailed teachers as the β€œbackbone of society” and recognized their critical role in shaping the future of communities and the nation.
He stated that President Hakainde Hichilema acknowledges the immense pressures faced by teachers, particularly in the implementation of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), which is seen as a β€œgame-changer” for the country.
Mr. Hichilema further stated that government has taken unprecedented steps to alleviate issues of teacher burnout and stress.
β€œGovernment has not gone to sleep,” the Assistant Secretary declared. β€œWe are actively seeking ways to empower you by providing the autonomy, resources, and recognition you deserve.”
He also highlighted Key government initiatives being undertaken in the education sector for the betterment of teachers, which include;
1. Substantial Employment Efforts: Continued recruitment of teachers to reduce workload and improve pupil-teacher ratios.
2. Enhanced Support to Schools: Provision of grants and other welfare initiatives to ensure schools have the necessary resources
3. Investment in Professional Development: A commitment to providing continuous opportunities for professional growth and pedagogical innovation.
Mr. Hichilema called for the establishment of robust support systems, including mentorship programs and access to mental health resources in order to build teacher resilience.
He also emphasized that fostering a culture of collaboration is essential for teachers to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
On sustainability, he clarified that it extends beyond environmental concerns to creating a system that supports long-term growth and innovation.
Teachers are recognized as key to this effort, integrating sustainable practices into their teaching and inspiring students to become responsible global citizens, a core objective of the CBC.
The Assistant Secretary also urged teacher labour movements to unite and present a common front when tabling matters affecting their members with government.
