74 premises closed down in Nakonde District due to non-compliance
Nakonde, February 10,2025, Nakonde Town Council in Muchinga Province has closed 74 premises in the town centre due to noncompliance with health regulations.
Nakonde Town Council Assistant Public Relations Officer, Florence Sichula said action was taken in response to the cholera outbreak in the district.
According to a press statement made available to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) this morning, Ms Sichula stated that the affected premises had inadequate handwashing facilities, unexamined food handlers, poor hygiene and ineffective waste management.
She said the local authority will continue making efforts to combat the cholera outbreak which has a record of 27 cases so far.
Ms Sichula pointed out that chlorination of wells, distribution of domestic chlorine, water quality monitoring, water provision through water bowser and sensitisation are some of the measures that have been put in place.
“We are ensuring safe drinking water for residents, providing households with resources to maintain proper hygiene, regularly testing water sources to prevent contamination and supplementing water supply in affected areas such as Ntindi Village,” she said.
She urged authorities in the district from various sectors to participate in the fight against cholera if the disease is to be contained.
Ms Sichula also called on the general populous to stay vigilant despite having no cholera patients in admission at the moment.
“As of today, all the three cholera patients have been discharged, however we remain alert as a district,” Ms Sichula said.
The accumulative number of cholera cases stands at 27 with 1 death dating back from December 24, 2024, when the district recorded its first case in Garbone area of Ntindi Village.
