Government commended for addressing accommodation challenges in health facilities
Kanchibiya, February 06, 2025, Kanchibiya District Health Director, Dr. Arron Ngwevu, has praised government’s efforts in addressing the accommodation challenges faced by health workers in the area through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Speaking to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) this morning, Dr. Ngwevu emphasized that the construction of new staff houses would significantly improve healthcare service delivery by enabling medical personnel to live closer to their workplaces.
“Accommodation has been a major challenge for our staff, especially in remote areas. With these new staff houses, we expect a significant improvement in the living conditions of our health workers, which will translate into better healthcare services for our communities,” Dr. Ngwevu said.
He highlighted one of the key projects nearing completion as a semi-detached staff house at Mala Kanchibiya Health Post in Luchembe Chiefdom, built at a cost of K908,366.00 under the 2024 CDF allocation whose project is currently at 95% complete.
Dr. Ngwevu noted that the lack of adequate housing in the area had previously hindered the recruitment and retention of qualified health personnel, but with ongoing construction projects, spearheaded by Kanchibiya Town Council, the situation was set to improve.
“These developments will not only benefit our staff but also contribute to healthier communities,” Dr. Ngwevu added.
Meanwhile Kanchibiya Town Council Secretary, Joseph Zulu earlier stated that the completion of a semi-detached staff house at Kapumfi Health Post which took six months to complete, was funded through the 2024 CDF at a cost of K871,196.46.
Mr. Zulu expressed gratitude to the government and stakeholders for their support in completing the project.
“We are delighted to announce the completion of the semi-detached staff house at the Kapumfi Health Post. This development is a step toward enhancing the quality of healthcare services in our community,” Mr. Zulu said.
He emphasized that the new staff house would help retain qualified health workers, who are essential for delivering quality healthcare to the community.
“The council remains committed to improving the living and working conditions of our public servants, and we are grateful to the government for the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) which has enabled this important project,” he added.
Mr Zulu called for sustained collaboration among government agencies, local leaders, and community members to ensure the timely completion of similar projects across the district.
