Government calls for concerted efforts in the fight against injustice on persons with albinism
Chinsali, January,22,2024, Government has called for concerted efforts in the fight against injustices on persons with albinism in Muchinga Province.
Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Henry Mukungule says various stakeholders need to come up with measures that advocate for the rights of people with albinism in a multi-sectoral approach.
Mr Mukungule charged that the levels of injustices against people living with albinism have reached an alarming stage from discrimination to murder, stressing that there is need to step up efforts in fighting these injustices.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Provincial Assistant Secretary Brian Sichande during a workshop on access to justice for persons with albinism facilitated by Caritas Zambia in Chinsali today, Mr Mukungule stated that Government will remain committed in supporting their rights and dignity.
“This situation should be addressed urgently with concrete measures, policies and legal reforms where necessary,” he added.
And Caritas Mpika Project Officer Baidon Chandipo, said the main objective of the workshop is to build the capacity of justice actors in the rights of persons with albinism.
Mr Chandipo stated that the training further aims to understand the extent and effectiveness of legal protection mechanisms for persons with albinism in the Zambian statute books.
“I wish to further call on Government and all stakeholders to support this mission in the fight for equal rights for persons with albinism,” he said.
He also noted that persons with albinism continue to face challenges in accessing justice for their violations, adding that the workshop will help the advocates in the implementation of the national action plan for persons with disabilities.
