15 bicycles procured to enhance Water, Sanitation and Hygiene activities in Isoka district

Isoka, January 14, 2025, The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation has procured 15 bicycles to enhance Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities in Isoka district in Muchinga Province.

The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation has delivered the bicycles to the Isoka Town Council for distribution to targeted WASH groups which are part of the District Water, Sanitation and Health Education (DWASHE) Committee.

Speaking during the distribution, Isoka Town Council Director of Engineering Jackson Mwanza said the bicycles would improve mobility for Community Champions and Area Pump Marketers (APMs), enabling them to deliver critical services efficiently.

“The bicycles will help these groups reach remote areas more effectively, ensuring the proper maintenance and management of water supply systems and sanitation initiatives,” said Mr Mwanza.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s long-term goal of ensuring sustainable access to clean water and sanitation services.

“Enhanced mobility for field staff is critical to achieving better health outcomes and improving the overall quality of life in our communities,” he said.

He also highlighted that the bicycles would help reduce response times when addressing pump breakdowns, which directly impact access to clean water, particularly in rural areas.

Mr Joseph Sichande, a trained APM, expressed how providing transportation would enable them to better serve communities.

“Having these bicycles will help us work more effectively by reaching far-flung areas to maintain water pumps, ensuring that people have clean drinking water,” he said.

And Ms Mable Musongole, a Community Champion, thanked the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation and the Isoka Town Council for their support, emphasizing its importance in expanding their outreach.

“This will help us achieve wider coverage to sensitize people on the importance of hygiene and good sanitation practices,” she said.

Muchinga Province is located in the northeast of the country and was created in the year 2011 after detaching it from mother province – Northern Province.
